What is telepsychiatry?

Telepsychiatry, as a branch of telemedicine, may be defined as the delivery of psychiatric treatment remotely, using live video-teleconferencing equipment (VTC). Telepsychiatry has been approved by the American Psychiatric Association and a growing body of research data clearly demonstrates that psychiatric treatment via telemedicine can be as effective as when delivered during traditional outpatient appointments.

Advances in technology and internet infrastructure have led to the release of free VTC software such as Skype (TM) and Facetime (TM),  V.SEE (TM) allowing for a crisp and secure VTC communication with your doctor from the comfort of your own home, a clinical process known as "home-based telepsychiatry".
